In eleventh grade Bobby and I realized why it was we sought outside of our high school for relationships. We came up with a theory that went like this: we knew everyone at FHS and didn’t necessarily love what we saw (not that we were any better, mind you), but in the world of camp, youth group and other towns we didn’t know the people all that well. So when we met someone and didn’t know all the details we naturally filled in what we didn’t know with details we liked. Make sense?Think of it this way: in high school (or maybe still) when you met someone new you got all excited and started thinking how perfect they were and how you were going to spend the rest of your life with them because they were the answer to everything… but when you already knew someone it was hard to have that romantic (and naïve) experience. New people were an easy way meet this ideal. At least that was what Bobby and I felt. (more…)
About 5 months ago I wrote about vehicles and destinations—about how it can be hard to know whether you’re trying to get somewhere to be there, or just trying to achieve one more step on a stairway that may never reach the top. Now I have more direction in some areas and a little more light to shed on the topic. (more…)
It pains me every time I re-realize how much of a slave I can be to my body. This weekend has pretty much been perfect–seeing much of my family (especially the ones that I really wanted to catch up with and rarely get the chance to), lots of great food, quality time with mom and dad, lots of great food ;-), and a really happy wedding. But I was kind of low for much of it. At first I attributed it to one of the usual causes: too much to do back in DC, the joys of being single, financial concerns…but when it persisted I figured out that I had some sort of bug in my system.
