Two Ways to Look at Life

I’ve been wondering whether some people consider life a series of events and others a long continuum…or whether some people just don’t seem to have a lot of events in their life. Anyone that knows me well knows that I always have “something big” in the works. Other people don’t always have something to report. I wonder whether it’s because of their view on life or because there actually isn’t anything exciting going on.

When I look back upon this last week I can think of a dozen noteworthy events: I finished and succeeded at my first 3-day training series, met with Mazda enthusiasts for the first time and learned a ton about cars, came up with a new idea worth marketing, went out with some dancers I haven’t seen in a while, saw a really good movie, etc… but most people can’t come up with that stuff, for whatever reason. Is it because they view these things as ordinary or because they just don’t do enough? Perhaps I’m not privy to this sort of knowledge from most people?

I think it’s worthwhile to look at life as a series of events (that can later be arranged into a continuum, if you so please). With an event-view things feel like accomplishments and life seems less depressing. If I just continue the stuff I was working on but don’t consider the little benchmarks as noteworthy then I just won’t be satisfied. Do things work like that for you?

The event-view gives me tangible things to report and helps me categorize whether I’ve accomplished anything in a given day. I know that most people aren’t as goal-oriented as I am, but I still think it makes life more livable when there are more events to report…at least to yourself. But I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on this. Drop me a note if you have a moment : ).
