Looking Back on Time…and this Website

I can’t believe that in the last eighteen months this site went from 100 hits/month to over 100 hits/day. I’ve been working on dancingwithwords.com, slowly but surely, for about three years now…and I’ve never felt so good about it as I do now.

I could go on and tell you how I’ve changed so much or how this site has taken on different meaning for me. However, the most important thing to realize here is that accomplishments and talents are all just about time.

Think about entrepreneurial dreams. Are you familiar with the process? To start a company you and whoever else you can get invest a bunch of money in an idea that will hopefully prove profitable. Most technology companies are looking to make a profit in one year, maybe three. The only way to find a return on investment is to stick with it…for a long time.

Well, the same applies to this website and my company, as well as hobbies, friendships, and serious relationships: it’s all about time.

There are instances in every activity when we want to give up. Maybe it’s playing bar chords on the guitar or learning the subjunctive in Spanish. Or maybe it’s when there’s no clear-cut next-step in your relationship or a promotion in sight at work. But stick it out, give it a shot, and you’ll be at the next level before you know it.

It’s instinctive for us to back away when we’re stressed, when something is difficult. Think back to your last emotional argument, didn’t you just want to hang up the phone or leave? But you waited it out and moved passed that discussion.

Sooner or later you’ll be looking back, taking it all for granted. “My girlfriend loves me,” “my job is secure,” “I’m in shape,” “I can play guitar,” etc. In time you won’t even remember when things weren’t like that. And it’s all because one day follows another until a few hundred days have passed…and there you are: where you wanted to be all along.

I don’t know what I wanted to come of this site. But here it is, something that takes little effort and gives me a lot of reward. I spent a lot of hard months getting it so that I could update it easily and so that the content was worthwhile. Well, here I am now, happy with it. I know that I will someday be able to say the same thing about my company. And there will a come day, in mine and in your life, that we can say that about our relationships, our kids, and so forth. Just give it a little time…
