I'm commenting on this because I think everyone needs to consider it. When I talk to my clients these days I can roughly assume I'm in a similar situation--me at my desk and they at theirs. But it's nothing at all like this with friends or significant others--one of us might be in the car or dancing around in the room, the other might be lying in bed or staring out the window. One may be wholly involved in the conversation and the other distracted by seven things going on at once. While people's moods tend to be somewhat contagious, one has to be so careful of being in an appropriate setting when talking to people one really cares about.

It's interesting now, as this hasn't been an issue in my life for so long now--it's something that, low and behold, I may have reconciled. But when I wrote about this I probably was just realizing that in a long distance relationship one really needs to not only be-in-touch but also to find ways to be on the same wavelength with their significant other. And the setting of calls and IMs is an important part of that.
