She Catches Me Staring and Smiles to the Window

two seats behind me
reclining,
an angel is peering at me now
from under a book.
she catches me staring and
smiles to the window,
again i’m in love
and with only a look.

No matter what’s going on in your life there are those times when someone allures your attention, and you wonder…

Brief eye contact on the metro, over and over. Small talk and smiles in the lunch line. Walking twenty minutes to the same building, a few strides apart. But you don’t forget her blue-grey eyes, her tantalizing smile, or the way her perfume blended with the cold air; and you wonder…

But we’re afraid to open up, we need more: a mutual friend, a shared interest, a simple excuse… And then once we’re in, there’s still so much more we need. I fear my list is endless. But that doesn’t mean we can’t want the fantasy. A dear friend of mine writes:

This is what I want: someone to serenade me, to play me a song, to give me a flower, to tell me I’m pretty, to carry my books, to ignore my imperfections; someone to hold my hand, to surprise me with something I said I wanted, to understand who I am, to read to me and give me a kiss goodnight; I want someone to make me realize that there was something I wanted, but I never even knew it.

Maybe a smile is just a smile, and romance only a dream. Surely there is so much more reality to relationships. But it’s hard to ignore those first glances, and I don’t want to. I just want to be happy, and I guess I’ll just hold onto those little things. After all, I can always dream…
