Internal Consistency…and some Adjectives
A good friend wrote me yesterday, “[I'm] trying to be more in the world the way i think i am to myself.” Isn’t that beautiful? How consistent are you with how you think of yourself? It’s an interesting concept. But I want to write about just a small part of that today: perception.
Yesterday I was talking to Ian about dating and how we would describe ourselves, for example, to someone we had never met. Neither of us would consider ourselves just normal, but does that mean we’re “abnormal”? I don’t think so. I’d define normal as being able to fit into public situations like meeting people at a party, attending a class, etc… Then I’d define abnormal as the negation of that. Of course, there’d be a lot of ground in between, with regards to one’s actual personality, interests, and needs. For these things I think more descriptive words would be better.
So I’d say I’m a normal guy. I fit in. But I’d like to think a great deal of other adjectives would apply. What three adjectives would you find are most descriptive of you? RMS described me as poetic, handsome, and likely. And KKG chose intelligent, sensitive, out-going. I’d say my three adjectives would be curious, social, and determined. In the discussion needy came up as well. Thoughts?
I don’t know that those are in any way sufficient descriptions of me. I don’t know that words or even pictures can ever do a person justice. Maybe vibes are what’s missing? Do people give off some sort of vibe regardless of how they seem to behave? So with regards to perception, what do you think is in between what you think of yourself and what others do? Do you give off any vibes? Try asking people, you’ll get some interesting responses…
