Getting Right on It…

There are only so many hours of the day, do you spend enough time on you? I’m nineteen years old (as of last week) and, yeah, I have a long time to grow and change… but the choices that I make now will have a huge impact on the rest of my life. Do you realize how important the present is?

How strong are you? The other day my dance professor, Ed Tyler, had us carry out a series of movements that relied a great deal on upper-body strength. Then he asked us a few questions, “Did you have enough strength for the last exercise, or would you have felt more comfortable if you were stronger? Well, what do you have to do when you need to move something?”

A girl responded, “I aks my boyfriend.” The guy next to her concurred, “There’s always someone nearby.”

Ed continued, “well, just think about the strength you have right now: do you like asking others for help, do you want to worry about hurting yourself when you need to pick something up? Now take into consideration that the strength you have now is only going to deteriorate over the rest of your life, and decide whether or not it’s sufficient.”

Right now I need to decide whether I want to deal with back-pain…whether I want clothes that cover my body or clothes that fit. I feel like a television commericial when I think “Right now!” and “Just Do It,” but it’s true.

And what about talents? Sure, there will always be time to learn, but college affords the unique opportunity to be surrounded by and living with people with such diverse skills. Take musical talent, for example. College is the time when people either STRENGTHEN their musical talent or watch it DIMINISH before their “busy” hands. Two people on my floor play guitar, and there’s no reason why I can’t learn more.

There’s so much more, too. I want to read; Ayn Rand, Milan Kundera, J.D. Salinger, Ray Bradbury, and many names you haven’t heard of crowd my shelf of books to read. Seeing all the classic and contemporary films I want to see would keep Blockbuster in business another year. And art? Museums? Newspapers? I wish I could say I read the newspaper or watch the news once per week, but I couldn’t even tell you half of what’s going on with the presidential elections, or the fighting in Israel…the world goes on!

I don’t know. Books and grades are important, but the rest of my life’s education awaits. Maybe I’m just impatient, but I think the time is now. Once more I’m diving in; care to join me? Well, at least wish me luck…
