The Lady and the Lindy
So much has been on my mind lately. Some recent events have forced me to rethink a lot of the thoughts I went through a month ago. But life is still very good. Here are some of the things on my mind…
On lindy: there’s no such thing as Hollywood or Savoy. Okay, so they may be valid styles, but their only purpose should be that of a tool for description and understanding. People shouldn’t work terribly hard to dance any particular style, regardless of what’s popular. I don’t dance Hollywood or Savoy, I just dance. When I compete in ballroom I perform syllabus steps to the best of my ability, but when I dance social lindy I have fun, and there’s no point in thinking that you can break my dance into steps and styles. Hollywood and Savoy are buzz-topics that can help us focus on particular aspects of our dance, but they shouldn’t encompass all of our moves or thoughts. If I’m leading and *I* don’t give you a need to counterbalance me then I shouldn’t need to support *you*. It’s just that simple. Dance is dance. Lindy is free. And I’m sick of all this narrow-mindedness…
On love: It doesn’t fade. The cliches are true. The movies are realistic. That doesn’t mean that someone’s right for you because you love them. It just means that you won’t forget them. And it doesn’t have to be hard. “Love is a dangerous angel” (Francesca Block), but an angel nonetheless.
